How to get involved

Even though Nat researchers are leading the charge, our work is most effective when community members like you help us out. You can join our efforts in two ways:

Make wildlife observations on your phone.

  1. Download the iNaturalist app or visit inaturalist.org and make an account.
  2. Join our project by clicking here, or searching “Healthy Canyons Initiative San Diego on iNaturalist.
  3. Select “Yes” when asked to trust the project (only on desktop). This step is very important!
  4. Observe plants and wildlife by taking quality pictures in your local canyon. You can also make observations within 500 meters (0.3 miles) of your canyon's perimeter.
  5. Upload your observations to iNaturalist, and watch as others help you identify plant and wildlife species.

Set up bird recorders on your property.

  1. Check out the project map to see if your home is within 1000 meters (~0.5 miles) from a selected canyon.
  2. Get in touch via our contact form under "Research".
  3. Let us know you are interested in setting up wildlife monitoring equipment on your property or to double check if you are qualified to participate. We will reach out to you with next steps.
